Hip-hop emerged in New York City in the 1970s, growing out of African American and Latino communities in the Bronx. More than a musical genre, it developed as a broader culture built around rapping (MCing), DJing, breakdancing and graffiti art. Early artists transformed turntables and existing records into something new, using rhythmic breaks as the foundation for parties, dance and spoken rhymes.
Over the following decades, hip-hop grew into one of the world’s most influential forms of popular culture. Its sound has continually evolved, from old-school rap and politically conscious hip-hop to gangsta rap, alternative hip-hop, trap and countless regional styles. Beyond music, hip-hop has had an enormous influence on fashion, language, dance, visual art and popular culture around the world.
